She gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Anna Bates in the ITV period drama series "Downton Abbey" from 2010 to 2015. Her performance earned her three Emmy nominations and she won the 2014 Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Froggatt first rose to prominence with her role as Zoe Tattersall on the popular soap opera "Coronation Street" from 1997 to 1998. She then transitioned to television films, starring in productions such as "Danielle Cable: Eyewitness" (2003), "See No Evil: The Moors Murders" (2006), and "Murder in the Outback" (2007).

In 2010, Froggatt received critical acclaim and won the British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer for her leading role in "In Our Name." She further showcased her versatility in film with roles in "Filth" (2013), "A Street Cat Named Bob" (2016), "Mary Shelley" (2017), and reprised her role in the "Downton Abbey" film adaptation released in 2019.

Joanne Froggatt hails from the village of Littlebeck in North Yorkshire, where she was born and raised. Her parents, Ann and Keith Froggatt, initially ran a corner shop before transitioning to a rare-breed sheep farm near Whitby. Froggatt has often drawn parallels between her childhood surroundings and the atmospheric setting of Emily Brontë's renowned novel "Wuthering Heights."
During her formative years, Froggatt became involved with a drama group in Scarborough. At the age of 13, she made the decision to leave her family home and enroll at the Redroofs Theatre School in Maidenhead, Berkshire, to pursue her passion for acting.

In 1996, Joanne Froggatt marked her television debut with a role in the long-standing ITV drama series, "The Bill." Shortly thereafter, she secured the part of Zoe Tattersall, a teenage mother, in the popular soap opera "Coronation Street." Froggatt departed from the show in 1998, coinciding with her character's storyline conclusion. Following this, in 1999, she appeared in the initial episodes of the inaugural season of the prison drama "Bad Girls," portraying the character Rachel Hicks.

In 2003, Froggatt took on the leading role in the controversial television drama "Danielle Cable: Eyewitness," which depicted the true story of a teenage girl who witnessed her boyfriend's murder in a purported road rage incident. She met with the real-life figure upon whom the story was based during her research for the role. The production earned a nomination for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Single Drama.
Continuing her television work, Froggatt portrayed Angelique Mahy in the ITV miniseries "Island at War," delving into the narrative of the German occupation of the Channel Islands. She also appeared in various other roles, such as Myra in the BBC Radio 4 drama "My Turn to Make the Tea" and as a main character in the drama "Missing."

In 2006, Froggatt took on two particularly challenging roles: portraying the sister of Myra Hindley in the ITV drama "See No Evil: The Moors Murders" and depicting the title character in "Joanne Lees: Murder in the Outback." The latter involved the portrayal of a real-life kidnapping, requiring Froggatt to perform scenes bound and gagged. She also graced the London stage in the adaptation of "All About My Mother," playing the role of Sister Rosa at the Old Vic Theatre.
Froggatt's television repertoire expanded with roles in series such as "Robin Hood," where she played Kate, a peasant, in its third season. She also appeared in "Spooks: Code 9" as Hannah and featured in the BBC Radio adaptation of "Solaris" as Rheya. Additionally, she played Kelly in the BBC drama "Moving On."
Throughout her career, Froggatt has demonstrated versatility and a willingness to tackle challenging and diverse roles across various mediums, earning recognition for her talent and dedication to her craft.

On 15 April 2010, Joanne Froggatt appeared alongside Lee Ingleby in the BBC Radio Four play "The Disappearance" by Peter Walley. In her film debut, "In Our Name," Froggatt portrayed Suzy, a soldier grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder. Her performance garnered critical acclaim, earning her the Best Newcomer award at the British Independent Film Awards.
Beginning in 2010, Froggatt became widely recognized for her role as Anna, the lady's maid to Lady Mary Crawley, in the acclaimed series "Downton Abbey." Her portrayal earned her Emmy nominations in 2012 and 2014, and she was honored with a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series, or TV Movie in 2015.

On 25 December 2010, Froggatt appeared in the "Royle Family Christmas" special, "Joe's Crackers," as Saskia, the girlfriend of Antony Royle. This marked Saskia's first on-screen appearance despite being mentioned in earlier episodes. Froggatt also starred in John Donnelly's play "The Knowledge" at the Bush Theatre in West London in early 2011.
In addition to her role in "Downton Abbey," Froggatt appeared in various projects, including the comedy-drama "Filth," the thriller "uwantme2killhim?," and the indie film "Still Life," all released in 2013. She voiced Wendy in the new "Bob the Builder" series in 2015 and starred in the ITV mini-series "Dark Angel" in 2016, portraying Victorian poisoner Mary Ann Cotton. Additionally, she co-starred in the drama "Starfish" as Nic, the wife of Tom Ray, also released in 2016.

In 2017, Froggatt took on the lead role of schoolteacher Laura Neilson in the six-part thriller mini-series "Liar" on ITV. The series follows Laura as she becomes convinced she was raped by respected surgeon Andrew Earlham, despite lacking clear memory or forensic evidence to support her claim. "Liar" aired in the US on SundanceTV.
Froggatt continued her stage career in 2019, starring as Frances Thorpe in the thriller "Alys, Always" at the Bridge Theatre in London, directed by Nicholas Hytner and based on the book by Harriet Lane.
