Karen Lucille Hale, born on June 14, 1989, in Memphis, Tennessee, is a multifaceted American actress and singer. Throughout her career, she has garnered widespread recognition and numerous awards, including an impressive seven Teen Choice Awards, making her the most awarded actress in a single series. Additionally, she has earned a Gracie Award, a People's Choice Award, and two Young Hollywood Awards for her contributions to the entertainment industry.


Hale's journey to fame began with early roles such as Becca Sommers in the series Bionic Woman (2007) and Rose Baker in Privileged (2008–2009). However, it was her portrayal of Aria Montgomery in the Freeform series Pretty Little Liars (2010–2017) that catapulted her to global stardom and earned her critical acclaim.
Expanding her repertoire, she went on to star as Stella Abbott in Life Sentence (2018), the titular character in Katy Keene (2020), and DC Lake Edmunds in Ragdoll (2021). Hale has also made notable appearances in various films, including The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (2008), A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song, and Scream 4 (both 2011). In 2018, she took on lead roles in Truth or Dare and Dude, followed by Fantasy Island (2020) and The Hating Game (2021).


In addition to her acting career, Hale is a talented musician who rose to prominence as one of the winners of the reality show American Juniors in 2003. She signed with Hollywood Records in 2012 and released her debut studio album, Road Between, in 2014, showcasing her versatility as a singer-songwriter.
Furthermore, Hale has demonstrated her hosting skills by co-hosting Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve from 2016 to 2021, solidifying her status as a versatile entertainer in the industry.


Karen Lucille Hale was born on June 14, 1989, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Julie Knight and Preston Hale. She was named after one of her great-grandmothers. Hale's mother, Julie, works as a registered nurse. She grew up with an older sister named Maggie, as well as a step-sister named Kirby and a step-brother named Wes.
Hale was homeschooled during her childhood, allowing her flexibility to pursue her interests in acting and singing. She received formal training in both disciplines and showed early promise in both fields.
However, in August 2012, Hale revealed that she had suffered from an eating disorder, shedding light on her personal struggles and demonstrating her courage in confronting and overcoming challenges in her life.


In 2003, Karen Lucille Hale made her television debut as a contestant on the Fox reality show American Juniors. Despite finishing in fourth place on July 30, 2003, she was part of a group formed with the top five finishers, named American Juniors. However, the group disbanded in 2005 due to lackluster album sales.
At the age of 15, Hale moved to Los Angeles with aspirations of securing a record deal. She began auditioning for various roles and landed a minor part on the popular show Drake & Josh, along with guest roles on series such as Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide, The O.C., and How I Met Your Mother. Additionally, she appeared in two episodes of the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place.


In 2007, Hale appeared in the short-lived NBC series Bionic Woman, portraying Becca Sommers, the younger sister of the titular character Jaime Sommers. This role marked her first significant television role. The character of Becca was originally portrayed by Mae Whitman in the unaired pilot episode before Whitman departed from the series.
Her big-screen debut came in August 2008, with a role in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2, where she played Effie Kaligaris, the younger sister of Lena Kaligaris. Following this, she starred in The CW series Privileged as Rose Baker, alongside co-stars Ashley Newbrough and JoAnna Garcia. Additionally, she appeared in the Lifetime television film Sorority Wars.


In October 2009, Karen Lucille Hale landed the role of Aria Montgomery in Pretty Little Liars, a television series adaptation of Sara Shepard's book series of the same name. The show aired for seven seasons from 2010 to 2017, earning critical acclaim and garnering numerous awards and nominations for Hale, including seven Teen Choice Awards, a Gracie Allen Award, a People's Choice Award, and a Young Hollywood Award.


In January 2010, Hale made a guest appearance on the CSI: Miami episode "Show Stopper," portraying singer Phoebe Nichols and her identical body double Vanessa Patton. She also had a cameo role as Sherrie in the 2011 slasher film Scream 4. Additionally, she starred as the aspiring singer Katie Gibbs in A Cinderella Story: Once Upon a Song, the third installment of the A Cinderella Story series, which was released on direct-to-video in September 2011. Hale recorded songs for the film's soundtrack.
In addition to her acting career, Hale has made appearances in music videos, including Foy Vance's "She Burns," Chase Jordan's "Lose Control (Take a Sip)," and Jackson Harris' "Come Back Down to Earth."


Hale also hosted an episode of MTV's Punk'd in April 2012, where she successfully pranked her Pretty Little Liars co-star Ian Harding, along with Vanessa Hudgens and Josh Hutcherson. Furthermore, she lent her voice to the character Periwinkle, the twin sister of Tinker Bell, in the animated Disney film Secret of the Wings, released the same year.
In June 2012, Hale announced that she had signed a record deal with Hollywood Records, in partnership with DMG Nashville, marking her official foray into the music industry.
