Challenges faced by marine engineers.
Marine engineering is the study, design, development, testing, and application of components, equipment, devices, and systems used at sea and on board sea vessels such as passenger boats, sailboats, cruise ships, supply ships, Security boats, submarines, or military battleships and aircraft carriers.
A marine engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly operation, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical equipment onboard any vessel.
CHALLENGES OF A MARINE ENGINEER
Apart from challenges of not getting to be with their families often, missing out on anniversaries, birthdays, graduations, and other important celebrations, Marine engineers face a lot of challenges.
These challenges ranges from missing home, missing out on important dates, stress, fatigue, seeing the same thing, same faces over and over again for months, burnouts and so much more. A marine Engineers life is a tough one that requires strength both physically and emotionally.
Marine engineers are constantly afraid of getting hijacked by sea pirates, accidents or incident can lead to loss of life or severe injury that will require the patient to be taken ashore for treatment. Other times, there can be an emergency situation which will warrant the team to work for more than your scheduled working hours, not forgetting that the engine room is extremely hot and they are constantly on boiler suites.
Sea sickness is another major issues mariners face onboard, having your vessel roll from left to right for hours. Sometimes main engines develop issues and you are in the middle of the high sea and you have a bad weather.
Engineers life’s could be fun as well when you are at a port and you have a long carrier, you get to stay at the port longer and explore, otherwise you do not have such long time before going back to the sea.
Seeing a colleague die from an accident or lose a part of their body is a very bad experience, a lot of marine engineers have to deal with that sometimes. Not to even think of going into a confined space to carry out maintenance/ repairs.
Marine engineers are truly the real MVPs.
