Antpool Willing To Refund To User The $3.14 Million Fee They Paid In A Bitcoin Transaction.

Today with pleasure and satisfaction, something I will explain at the end, I read the news that Antpool intends to return the 83 BTC to the user who paid a record fee by mistake. For those who are not aware of the subject, I briefly summarize it.

On November 23, a Bitcoin user apparently mistakenly paid a fee of more than 83 BTC (about $3 million) when sending a transaction. This action was something that undoubtedly caught the attention of the entire Bitcoin community, as it is the highest fee paid for a single transaction in the history of the network. The user sent 55.3 BTC to an address and paid 83.36 BTC in commission, which is approximately 150% more than the amount transferred.

Three days later, the user created a Twitter account under the name @83_5BTC and claimed to be the original owner of the funds used in the transaction, signing a message from the compromised Bitcoin address that read: "@83_5BTC is the owner of the funds that paid the high fee". According to his account, the money was stolen when he transferred 139 BTC to a new cold wallet. The user suspects that someone was running a script on that wallet and that the script had a strange fee calculation.

In a gesture of generosity on the part of Antpool, the pool that mined block 818087 that contained the transaction, has announced that it will return the funds to the user who had claimed to be the victim of a hack. In his official statement they state: “Dear users, on November 23, a user sent 83 BTC as a gas fee. Antpool's risk control system temporarily froze the fee when processing the transaction. We ask that you contact us before 00:00 (UTC+8) on December 10, 2023 and confirm your identity as follows. Upon verification, Antpool will proceed with the refund of the fee”.

Antpool, founded by Chinese company Bitmain, is one of the largest Bitcoin mining pools that aggregates the computing power of many miners to increase the probability of solving a block and receiving rewards for them. Miners, who contribute their hash rate to the pool and find blocks, are rewarded based on the amount of work contributed. In addition, the company is one of the main manufacturers of cryptocurrency mining hardware, the Antminer ASIC chips, which are some of the most powerful on the market. Although headquartered in Hong Kong, it has data centers around the world, including the United States, Canada, Russia, Kazakhstan and Ireland.

At the beginning of the article I commented that I received the news with "pleasure and satisfaction" due to the honest and responsible behavior of the Antpool mining pool. This attitude is in addition to that carried out by the F2Pool mining pool, which recently reimbursed the cryptocurrency company Paxos, $500,000 in fees that it paid in error. These types of cases demonstrate that the Bitcoin community is made up of people who value integrity and transparency, and who are willing to help each other in difficult situations. It is also a reminder that the Bitcoin network is secure and that human or technical errors can be corrected if acted quickly and with good will.
