Mia Goth
Mia Goth
Mia Goth is a British actress known for her diverse roles in film. After a short period in modeling during her teenage years, she transitioned into acting. Her feature film debut came with a notable role in the erotic art film "Nymphomaniac" in 2013. Following this, she gained recognition for her performances in various films, including "The Survivalist" (2015), "High Life" (2018), "Suspiria" (2018), and "Emma" (2020).
However, it was in 2022 that Mia Goth experienced a significant breakthrough in her career. She starred in the X slasher film series, appearing in both "X" and "Pearl." Notably, she co-wrote the latter installment, showcasing her talents beyond acting. This achievement marked a milestone in her career, further solidifying her presence in the film industry.
Mia Goth was born in Guy's Hospital in London, England. Her background is a blend of diverse cultures, with her mother being Brazilian and her father Canadian, originally from Nova Scotia. Notably, her maternal grandfather is Jewish-American artist Lee Jaffe, while her maternal grandmother is Brazilian actress Maria Gladys.
At a very young age, Mia and her mother moved to Brazil, where they resided for some time to seek support from family. They later returned to the United Kingdom when Mia was five years old. Subsequently, they briefly lived in Mia's father's native Canada when she was ten, where she faced challenges adapting to multiple school changes. Eventually, when she was twelve, Mia and her mother settled in southeast London, where Mia attended Sydenham School. Raised in a single-parent household, her mother worked as a waitress to provide for their needs.
At the age of 14, Mia Goth was discovered by fashion photographer Gemma Booth at the Underage Festival in London, leading to her signing with Storm Model Management. She quickly made a name for herself in the fashion industry, appearing in advertising campaigns for renowned brands like Miu Miu and Prada. Additionally, she graced the pages of numerous prestigious magazines, including Wonderland, Vogue, W, Love, Dazed, Interview, AnOther, British Vogue, Document Journal, Glamour, and Pirelli. Mia made her runway debut in 2023, opening the Miu Miu Fall/Winter 23 Show.
Transitioning into acting, Mia began auditioning for film roles at 16. After completing sixth form, she secured her first significant role in Lars von Trier's "Nymphomaniac" (2013), starring alongside Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe in the segment "The Gun." She also portrayed Sophie Campbell in an episode of Sky Atlantic's crime drama series "The Tunnel."
In 2014, Mia appeared in Future Unlimited's music video for "Haunted Love," directed by Shia LaBeouf, and starred in the Stephen Fingleton-directed short film "Magpie" alongside Martin McCann. The following year, she starred as the lead character Milja in the post-apocalyptic thriller "The Survivalist," directed by Fingleton. Mia's other notable film roles include Meg Weathers in the disaster adventure-thriller "Everest" (2015), directed by Baltasar Kormákur, and Hanna Helmqvist in an episode of BBC One's crime series "Wallander."
She continued to expand her filmography with roles in various genres, including the horror film "A Cure for Wellness" (2016), directed by Gore Verbinski, Luca Guadagnino's remake of "Suspiria" (2018), and the sci-fi mystery film "High Life" (2018), directed by Claire Denis. Mia also appeared in Guadagnino's short film "The Staggering Girl" (2019) and Autumn de Wilde's period romantic comedy "Emma" (2020). Additionally, she starred in Karen Cinorre's action drama film "Mayday" (2021) alongside Grace Van Patten and Juliette Lewis.
In Ti West's slasher film "X," released in March 2022, Mia Goth delivered a standout performance, earning critical acclaim. She underwent extensive prosthetic makeup to portray the elderly character Pearl, spending long hours in the makeup chair before filming. Despite the challenges, Goth's dedication to the role paid off, with her portrayal of both protagonist Maxine Minx and antagonist Pearl receiving praise from audiences and critics alike. Director Ti West commended her understanding of the characters' duality, stating that she brought depth to each role.
Following the success of "X," Goth starred in its prequel film, "Pearl," which she co-wrote with Ti West. The film, released in September 2022, also garnered positive reviews, further solidifying Goth's talent as both an actress and a writer. Her performance in "Pearl" received acclaim, earning her a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Performance.
Continuing her streak of compelling performances, Goth appeared in Brandon Cronenberg's thriller "Infinity Pool" opposite Alexander Skarsgård. Premiering at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, the film was well-received by critics, with Goth's performance once again drawing praise for its depth and intensity.
Looking ahead, Goth is set to reprise her role as Maxine Minx in the "X" sequel, titled "MaXXXine." Additionally, she is slated to appear in the crime thriller "Sweet Dreams" and has been attached to star in Guillermo Del Toro's "Dr. Frankenstein" and Marvel Studios' "Blade," showcasing her versatility as an actress across various genres and projects.
It seems that Mia Goth's personal life has been quite eventful, including her relationship with actor Shia LaBeouf. The two met while working on the film "Nymphomaniac" in 2012 and went on to have a tumultuous relationship. They had a Las Vegas ceremony in 2016, which was initially reported as a legal marriage but later revealed to be a commitment ceremony. They ultimately separated in 2018 but reconciled in 2022, with Goth becoming pregnant with their first child, who was born in March of the same year.
However, recent reports suggest that Mia Goth has encountered legal troubles related to her work on the set of the film "Maxxxine." Background actor James Hunter has sued her, alleging bullying and physical assault, including an incident where he claims to have been intentionally kicked in the head by Goth. Such allegations, if true, could have serious implications for Goth's professional reputation and career.
