My sister's dilemma
Yesterday my sister ran away from the house. She told me she'd run away someday, but I didn't know yesterday was someday. She however didn't mention to me why she wanted to run. Her name is Emem.
I am very close to Emem and she tells me everything that happens to her. My immediate elder sister, the one who follows Emem, is not as close to Emem as I am. There was a day Emem told her she had a boyfriend; that evening, my mom asked Emem why she had a boyfriend if my father hadn't provided her with everything she needed in school.
Since then, Emem preferred to confide in me. I keep her secrets. Last week in church, the pastor preached about Upholding Virginity as a Woman. My mom who is always seated in front turned severally towards the direction where I sat with my sister Emem. Those stares were familiar, as if she'd want to say, Emem, pay attention now, at least someone else has said what I keep telling you.
The District Superintendent of our Church is coming to Uyo tomorrow, the Head of Youth Ministry, Evangelist Rose Ekong, and my mom announced after the Youth Forum that all the girls who are virgins should wait after the forum. They are to accompany the protocol team to line up at the airport and welcome the District Superintendent. They will all be adorned in immaculate white tops and blue skirts.
But my father and my mom are not aware. Emem had stabbed her boyfriend yesterday who made her commit several abortions and then cheated on her with her friend. She left a note in my room that she can't pretend anymore. My father has been venting at everyone.
The girls were supposed to move to a hotel this morning. From there, they'll move to the airport to receive the District Superintendent. Now that my sister is missing from the team, everyone would know she is not a virgin and my mom had been lying to the church. But I knew my sister, at least she told me everything.
I hope she's safe wherever she is. Of course, I will pretend and continue searching for her as everyone else. The note she left for me stays with me forever.
